Conoces Chewy Tubes?

Many (if not all) of the residents of Bienaventurados de Jesus need feeding therapy.  One of my favorite tools for feeding therapy is the Chewy Tube and its gang (see here).  I called today, and guess what?  John from Chewy Tubes is sending me all we need for the trip!  How excellent is that?  It was hard to ask, but I did it, and he could not have been nicer.  Shout out to Speech Pathology Associates for supporting our trip!

Now, what is a Chewy Tube called in Spanish?  In New York Spanish, a PEG feeding tube is usually called “el tubito.”  So we would not want to confuse the two!  How about Tubito Correoso?  Or, wait, how about Masticito, the little chewable one?  Or we could just do El Chewy.  What do you think?

No matter what we call it, the goodies from Speech Pathology Associates will be a much appreicated addition to our upcoming trip.  Muchas muchas gracias!

Move it! !Muevete!

Did you get an email telling you which team you are on?  Have you written to your teammates?  Have you sent in your payments?

Well…get cracking!

I am as bad as the rest of you.  I have booked my airfare and sent the $200.  Now to find a minute to send the $50 for the dinner.

I am trying to speak Spanish a little bit each day, to get my “Spanish ears” on.  I’ll let you be the judge of how that is going when we meet (hint:  not so well).  What are you doing to get ready for our big adventure?

Today’s inspiring quote

Caminante, no hay camino;
se hace camino al andar

Traveler, there is no road; you make the way by walking.

For many of us, this might be a first trip abroad; a first volunteer experience; a first use of a newly minted diploma (shout out to Hara, Jen and Julie).  We are not sure exactly how this journey unfolds…but it’s all part of the adventure!

Does this quote remind you of another famous poem?

Do you know which poem this comes from?

Sneak Peek (mira aqui)

Did you know that Bienaventurados de Jesus has a blog, too?  You can take a quick look around at where we will be working, and see some of the residents of the home, by clicking thru.

You can see the hotel we are staying at here.

! Hola !

We are a group of speech-language pathologists and other allied health professionals from the United States, and we are going to Guadalajara this July to work in a group home/orphanage.  The kids there are aged 2-21 and most have severe cerebral palsy.

Our group was started by Margarita Fajardo, who has been doing this since 2007.

I’m Shari Berkowitz, a professor at Mercy College in New York, and I started this blog so that those of us on the trip could have a chance to meet (virtually) in advance, and so that we could get the word out about all the good works we are doing.

Participants will receive an email soon, explaining how to contribute to the blog.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you!
